The Cash for Clunkers program you've been hearing
about has passed both the House and the Senate and will be signed into law within a few days. Here's what you need to know: This will be a great opportunity to get out of your older car that doesn't get great mileage and get into one that does, using a combination of the $3,500 or $4,500 voucher, the best price Access Auto can negotiate for you on the new car, and any manufacturer rebates or low interest rate specials that are in place. It's a very short-term program. Probably starting in mid July, it will end in November 2009. If you have a vehicle you want to turn in, make sure you know where your title and registration are, and check them carefully to make sure there are no problems with either. Occasionally, you'll find your registration shows a lienholder, even though you paid the loan off years ago. It's time consuming correcting those kinds of things, so get started on it now. Beware of websites that try to direct you to "participating" dealers. What these dealers are "participating" in is paying for referrals from the website. They'll get your contact information and then drive you crazy. Vouchers will be for either $3,500 or $4,500, depending on the improvement in mileage you get by turning the "clunker". And you must turn it in for a NEW vehicle. Buying a pre-owned one doesn't qualify. You need to have owned and operated a qualifying 1984 or later vehicle for at least the last year. If you have a car that's now being "non-opped" it won't qualify. You can't go out and buy a junker and then use it for this voucher program. Combined mileage on the clunker and qualifying improved mileage on the new vehicle varies by the type of vehicle. Cars are different than SUV's, Pickups, Vans, Work Trucks, etc. To find out what vehicles are eligible that average 18 mpg or less and have a value of less than $4500, click
here. If your car is worth more, don't turn it in. value, so it could be costly to miss out. You can find more information at the Edmunds.com website Please feel free
